Groups and Projects

Dan Effland Trio

A jazz guitar trio dedicated to artistically exploring the fundamental jazz tradition of playing songs and improvising on them. We play whatever we hear on whatever songs we like to play. Respect for the jazz tradition and an exploration of our musical personalities and how they relate to each other and the material are our goals. Adam Sorensen on drums and Joe Policastro on bass.

Rose Colella Group w/Dan Effland and Joe Policastro

This group varies in size and instrumentation, but the nucleus is a very tight vocal-guitar-bass trio. We love songs and focus primarily on an endless exploration and presentation of the Great American Songbook and some of the great composers from Brazil, including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa, Djavan, and others.

Chris Madsen Trio

This group, led by tenor saxophoneist Chris Madsen, consists of Joe Policastro on bass and myself on acoustic guitar. Our first endeavor is re-arranging classic Bix Beiderbecke/Frank Trambauer arrangements for the trio. We will be releasing our first record this year.

Joe Policastro Trio

Led by Chicago bassist Joe Policastro, this clarinet-guitar-bass trio is deeply influenced by the various Jimmy Giufree groups as well as the early Benny Goodman bands with Charlie Christian.

DE Blues Quartet

A tenor/guitar/bass/drums quartet that plays primarily original compositions influenced by the 50's and 60's records put out by Kenny Burrell, Jimmy Smith, Hank Mobley and and others.

Dan Effland Group

This group includes some very experienced and talented musicians with Jeb Bishop on trombone, Mark Zigler on bass, and Tim Daisy on drums.  We play predominately my own compositions and strive to create music that combines the melodic elements of more traditional jazz, but allows room for exploration of the sounds and textures of the avant-garde.  We have released one album entitled "Last Call."

I like old songs.
